Reflection #2

1.     What have you accomplished since your last report? (For the first report, you will briefly describe your activities for the previous week). Since my last report, I have begun reviewing for the exam. Finding web sites as well as the sources we used for the Instructional Design Course is what I have started reading. Since I haven’t cleaned off my desk from the research class last semester, I need to do that so I can start taking notes and organizing in a visual manner (important learning method for me) methods and the ‘elevator’ effect.

I’ve done a lot of reading, some specifically for this class and the exam, some because I have volunteered to review the Distance Learning and the Design and Training presentations for AECT at the NECC convention. I found them very interesting from several points of view. Since they were formal proposals for presentations, it was a unique opportunity for me to evaluate what a proposal looks like. It’s not something I’ve done before for fun. It was also interesting to read their topics, what research they had done for the proposal and their method of presentation.

2.     What are your short-term objectives and plans for achieving those objectives for the next two weeks? My goals and objectives for the next two weeks is to compose the analysis phase of my proposal. Although I have it in my head, it’s not on paper yet. I need to more forward with the design phase. I learned at the TCEA convention how to make streaming video as well as how to use MS Producer and Powerpoint. I’d like to attempt to use streaming video as the online delivery method to my proposal. I’ve worked with the department webmasters and formed some ideas about what could be surveyed to determine if they have a need and if they have the skills to learn to create graphics for the web.

3.     What have you learned since you submitted your previous synopsis?

The first synopsis, I've learned this may be my most difficult semester since it is not as structured as the other classes were. Without quizzes, discussions, synchronous meetings, I'm struggling to stay on task. The other thing I've learned is I've forgotten specific details about instructional design.

Since the first synopsis, this theory hasn’t changed. It’s always been hard for me to focus without a deadline or specific tasks to accomplish. One good thing that has happened, is I’ve volunteered to read proposals for presentation at the NECC convention from AECT. I’ve reviewed proposals for Distance Learning and Design and Development. I didn’t expect any correlation to my masters and these proposals, but it was like reading assignments. What a perfect review for the comprehensive exam! They’ve helped me remember topics, authors and that I still need to review a lot.

I have also learned I remember more about the ADDIE method that I thought I did. I also realized that the reason I remember it is because it is the method I actually use as I create training for the administrators I support….just don’t call it ADDIE as I do it. There are steps I don’t do, such as create a pre-survey to determine need, relevance, or ability. That is something that I probably should do, but the limited time I have with them usually prohibits a pre-survey or practicing what the training was about.
