| Budget: With
the award of the $50,000 technology grant, the goal of the Technology Planning
Committee was to furnish the Journalism lab with up-to-date computers, printers,
scanner and digital cameras. A server would function as a file server and
email server. It was determined that a client-server network to the file
server would suffice for starters until the district IT department could
train a teacher or campus staff to act as Network Administrator. |
|
Purchasing Justification: The Journalism lab is a small room in the English department. The interest in Journalism has always been strong, but the opportunity to create newsletters, brochures, the year book and short stories has been limited due to the age of technology. With a $50,000 grant, it was decided to upgrade equipment to the best possible for the current size of the classroom. When the school is remodeled and the new wing added for additional lab space, laptops will be added to the lab as well as additional software to attract more interest in Journalism. |
|
| Topology and Architecture Justification:
The Journalism lab in Haltom High
School was a congomeration of old Macs and PCs that were slow and not networked.
This grant provided new equipment, but still in a small classroom. Due to
the cost of laptops, it was decided to start with desktop computers and
expand the lab when the new wing is added. |
|
| Schematic: The classroom available for this lab is an older Mac lab. It is the Journalism classroom furnished with quad style furniture. Due to budget constraints, the Technology Planning Committee chose to use the current room configuration and concentrate on high quality hardware and software. The room is currently wired with Cat 5 cabling and drops to the ethernet hubs cabled down from the ceiling. This cabling was provided by the IT department as part of the district contribution for obtaining the funding for this grant. |
